Overview

Dr Wheeler is Associate Professor in Environment, Health and Inequalities at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, and is Centre co-director. He is a health geographer with wide ranging research interests in environment-health interconnections. His PhD was in the Department of Social Medicine at the University of Bristol, on the relationship between socio-economic health and environmental inequalities. His first post-doctoral research position was at Victoria University of Wellington School of Earth Sciences, in a unit funded by the NZ Ministry of Health to carry out geographical public health research. Subsequent research positions have been at the University of Sheffield Department of Geography, and back at the Department of Social Medicine at Bristol. He has also worked in public health in the National Health Service, and with environmental consultancies.

Dr Wheeler has been at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health since its beginnings in 2010. He applies geographical and epidemiological methods to research the beneficial and adverse impacts that the environment can have on human health and health inequalities.

Broad research specialisms

Dr Wheeler is a health geographer and environmental epidemiologist. Much of his research involves using secondary datasets and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to investigate environment and human health relationships. He also has substantial experience in research on socio-economic and geographical health inequalities.

Research interests

Ben is a quantitative health geographer and environmental epidemiologist. His research focuses on:

1. adverse and beneficial impacts of the environment on public health and wellbeing, especially green/blue space, physical activity and mental health at population scale;

2. applications of GIS and spatial analysis to link and analyse large-scale health and environmental datasets;

3. environmental and socio-spatial health inequalities.

He works extensively with large, collaborative interdisciplinary research project teams addressing these issues, in projects supported by funders including ESRC, NERC, NIHR, Wellcome Trust and the European Commission. Ben works with a wide range of partners to translate evidence, especially on links between natural environments and health, to inform public health and environmental policy at local, national and international scales.

External Engagement and Impact

Engagement & Impact Activities

I am a member of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Natural Environments and Health at the University of Exeter, and have an ongoing role in working with World Health Organisation for Europe on Urban Greenspace and Health. This role has included participation in expert advisory committees and co-authorship of key WHO Urban green spaces and health report. I am lead author of the 2021 WHO Report Nature, biodiversity and health: an overview of interconnections.
I have worked with colleagues on our collaborations with DEFRA and Natural England around the incorporation of health and wellbeing in national environmental policy and delivery, and our work is cited in the 25 year environment plan .
I interact extensively with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities and UK Health Security Agency (previously Public Health England, e.g. through the Health Protection Research Unit in Environmental Change and Health) providing evidence to inform public health and related policy. For example our work on green space and mental health is a case study in PHE guidance on Spatial Planning for Health.
We have been consulted for and our research has been cited in 2 POSTnotes (Parliamentary Office of Science & Technology evidence summaries) on 1) urban green infrastructure and 2) green space -health linkages
I lead the impact project “Informing environmental investment for health and wellbeing” as part of the NERC South West Partnership for Environmental and Economic Prosperity.
I have worked with Cornwall Council since 2015 on using our research to inform the management of public open space for biodiversity, health and wellbeing, supported by ESRC Impact Acceleration Account funding. I am a member of the University of Exeter team working with Cornwall Council on the Making Space for Nature project.
I am a member of the Cornwall Health System Equalities group
I work with Public Health Dorset on projects relating to Healthy Places stream of work, such as the greenspace accessibility project.
I have presented our research at venues including the House of Lords Rural Economy Research Group (2015), at DEFRA, and to the Valuing Nature Programme.
Since 2013 I have led the Beyond Greenspace blog site (www.beyondgreenspace.net), which we use to disseminate and discuss our research with a wide audience; in 2020 the blog achieved over 15000 views from over 6,500 visitors.
I have given a range of public/evening lectures on the environment and human health for a range of local organisations e.g. St Agnes Marine Conservation Group, Torbay Hospital Library lecture series.

Teaching

Ben has been involved in the MSc in Environment and Human Health since its first cohort in 2012, and was co-director of the programme from 2018-2023. He leads the module “Environmental Science and Population Health” (HPDM030Z) and also contributes to various other MSc modules, and supervises dissertations.

He contributes a Research Special Study Unit for the 3rd year of the BMBS programme, and a Global and Planetary Health SSU for 2nd years. He also delivers guest lectures to students studying environmental science and geography.

Ben co-designed and now contributes to the CPD course 'Nature, Health & Wellbeing'

Ben is an ASPIRE Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
