Russell graduated from the University of Stirling in 2018 with BSc (Hons) Cell Biology. He then gained laboratory experience in the biotechnology industry as a ‘Genomics Analyst’ for Neogen Europe for 2 years, during which time he performed DNA extractions and SNP microarrays.
In late 2020, he returned to education at the University of Glasgow to study an MSc in Medical Genetics and Genomics, which he completed in September 2021.
In October 2021, he joined the Monogenic Diabetes group at the RILD as a PhD student under the supervision of Dr Elisa de Franco and Dr Sarah Flannagan. The project is entitled “Identifying novel insulin secretion disorders caused by mitochondrial dysfunction to highlight fundamental pathways within the β-cell”.
