Overview

Emma completed her PhD in Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter in 2017, where she investigated the benefits of different exercise intensities on the cardiometabolic health of children and adolescents. This included a study assessing the potential benefits of high-intensity interval exercise on metabolic control in adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes.

In 2017, Emma joined the University of Exeter Medical Schools, NIHR South West Peninsula Applied Research Collaboration as a research fellow, where her research focused on the meaningful involvement of patients and members of the public in health service research. Here Emma was involved in a number of research projects leading the involvement aspect of the research projects as well as researching the processes of patient and public involvement in research.

In 2021, Emma joined the University of Exeter Medical School Primary Care department with a National School for Primary Care research postdoctoral fellowship. During this fellowship, Emma will combine her interest in Physical Activity and Health, with her understanding of patient and public involvement and health service research. The programme of research will focus on improving support for physical activity for Adolescents with Type one diabetes, with the aim to develop a complex behavior change intervention that supports this group to increase levels of physical activity and improve long-term health and wellbeing.

Teaching

I currently teach at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. I co-lead the second-year medical science option module on key approaches in Health Research and a master's level sport and Exercise Medicine module on orthopedic challenges. I have additional teaching involvement across the undergraduate medicine and medical sciences programs, providing tutorial support on the making sense of evidence curriculum and providing lectures around the patient and public involvement across undergraduate modules.
