Health Professions Education & Wellbeing research group

The Health Professions Education & Wellbeing research group exists to support the local and national implementation of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, with its three priority areas “Train, Retain and Reform”. Our research is undertaken in partnership with those delivering and receiving education and clinical services, with strong patient, public and key stakeholder involvement and engagement.

We collaborate across departments, organisations, professions and disciplines to explore education and wellbeing holistically and across careers, from undergraduate student to those long established in the health and social care workforce. Many of our studies are funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research and we work closely with the NIHR Incubator for Clinical Education Research.

Our diverse membership includes clinicians, educators and researchers from multiple health and social care professions, as well as undergraduate, masters and doctoral students and public representatives. We have broad methodological expertise, spanning evidence syntheses and empirical research studies, and take innovative approaches to dissemination, engagement and impact.

Led by Professor Karen Mattick, we offer a range of activities to develop ourselves and our research, including seminars, methodology workshops, doctoral discussion group, journal club, peer-review sessions and regular social events.

We are a large, distributed group with shared values around diversity, inclusion and personal development. As such, we welcome conversations with prospective research group members, doctoral students, collaborators and funders.
