Dr. Geschwind is a pioneer in the functional genomic analyses of the nervous system. His laboratory showed that gene co-expression has a reproducible network structure that can be used to understand neurobiological mechanisms in health and disease. Dr. Geschwind has also been an early and persistent advocate for data sharing, having developed several resources housing patient genetic and phenotype data, including the Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (AGRE) and currently is the chair of the PsychENCODE consortium. He is the Co-Chair of the Genetics and Genomics Section of the Faculty of 1000 and serves on the editorial boards of Cell, Neuron. Full details | Add event |

12 May 2021 | 15:00 | Soojin Ryu: Using Zebrafish to Understand StressUsing Zebrafish to Understand Stress While critical for survival and coping in fluctuating environment, prolonged exposure to stress compromise animal’s functions. We are interested in understanding how stress hormones shape animal’s behaviour including the ways in which prolonged stress exposure leads to behavioural dysfunctions. We use zebrafish as a model organism which provides superb experimental access to dissect the relationship between stress exposure and phenotypic outcomes. Our research centers around the key stress hormones produced by our body’s main stress response system, the Hypothalamo-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis coordinates diverse aspects of stress response in all vertebrates and the hormones produced by the HPA axis are remarkably conserved throughout vertebrate kingdom. Using optogenetic and genetic targeting, we have developed a zebrafish model with which we could manipulate both acute and long term stress exposure precisely. I will discuss in this. 5 May 2021 | 12:00 | Faculty Development Educational Seminar Series: Doctors Are People Too - How Research Can Inform Policy and Practice by Professor Jennifer ClelandEvent Information: Matching medical workforce supply to health need is a global issue. Although the absolute number of doctors in many countries continues to grow, the medical workforce is unevenly distributed by locality and some specialties are more popular than others. Many areas within the UK struggle to recruit and retain trainees and doctors. This lecture draws on a 10-year programme of work to highlight the factors most valued by medical students and trainees in terms of their career choices and personal priorities. The seminar concludes by discussing the implications of this contemporary evidence for governments and healthcare organisations in relation to recruiting and retaining today’s generation of doctors.. 17 March 2021 | 13:00 | Faculty Development Educational Seminar Series: The Unbearable Whiteness of Seeing (in Medicine): How Racist Legacy Structure Impacts the Core Clinical Art of Seeing Patients by Alexa MillerEvent Information: This talk shares Alexa Miller’s research on clinical uncertainty: a critical crossroads for a clinician where their performance holds the potential either to yield the excellence of healing and discovery, or to entangle them with medicine’s systemic harm. After a brief overview of key challenges and opportunities of medical uncertainty, participants will engage in a visual-arts-based exercise that reveals key principles of excellence in clinical uncertainty. The final portion of the talk identifies key invisible influences that can sway performance in uncertainty, with a focus on the racism of the institutions in which we operate and the subjectivity of the white gaze to clinical pitfalls. Please join us to learn the basics of an observation-first approach to patients, recognize the infinite complexity of human dynamics, and how our core capacities as humans represent critical levers for equity in health.. 17 February 2021 | 12:00 | Faculty Development Educational Seminar Series: How a Predominantly White Faculty Can Empower BAME Students by Dr Musarrat Maisha RezaWhite faculty members or supervisors in senior management positions often shy away from mentoring BAME colleagues, students and proteges because it is ‘not their place to mentor them’. While it is true that representation and role models from underrepresented communities are critical to ensure greater diversity and inclusivity and race matched mentorships are useful, research increasingly highlights the benefits of cross-race mentoring in higher education institutes and how white mentors can bring about significantly positive outcomes for their mentees as well as themselves. 15 February 2021 | 15:30 | EGENIS seminar: Book Launch: 'The Rise of Autism: Risk and Resistance in the Age of Diagnosis' Dr Ginny Russell (University of Exeter)The book is about how the use of diagnosis has increased over the last 30 years in the UK and is a key output from our Exploring Diagnosis project. An initial overview will describe how it was written as a counterpoint to work with the neurodiversity movement, and present some data from the latest surveys that demonstrate the dramatically increased diagnosis of autism in Europe and US since the 1990s. The book offers a critical understanding of autism statistics, and why there are competing interpretations of the same data. It provides both commentary on, and contribution to, the neurodiversity movement. After a talk to introduce the contents of the book, discussants will give their own unique take on the rising use of autism diagnosis and the phenomenon of diagnostic creep. 4 November 2020 | 12:00 | Faculty Development Educational Seminar Series: Investigating our Unconscious Biases, Empowering BAME Students by Dr Maisha RezaEvent Information We feel that we are open-minded, progressive individuals who are trying to make the world a little bit better. While the intention is great, sometimes, our unconscious biases hold us back. Despite our efforts to be inclusive, BAME students still feel a sense of isolation/loneliness or a poor sense of belonging because often as academics, we may say things or behave in ways that may offend, discourage or disempower them due to our unconscious biases. Are we ready to become conscious of our unconscious biases? Dr Reza will share her journey on peeling some layers of her unconscious bias through critical reflection and charting a path forward.. 14 March 2018 | 16:30 | How to program your microbe: sequencing and modelling to the rescueSynthetic genetic circuits offer a way for us to reprogram and implement novel functionalities in living cells. They are composed of many interconnected parts encoded in DNA which must function together in concert. Unfortunately, these parts often behave differently when pieced together, due to contextual effects and unintended interactions with the host cell. In this talk, I will demonstrate how we have been using sequencing technologies and mathematical modelling to tackle this problem. I will show how RNA-sequencing can be used to reveal the inner workings of large genetic circuits and uncover why some designs fail. Such capabilities will be essential for us to better understand the rules governing the effective construction of our own complex biological circuits, as well as the evolution of natural systems..
