Miriam graduated from University College Cork, Ireland in 2007. Over the past nine years Miriam has been working in the Health Service Executive (HSE) in Ireland as a Staff Grade and Senior Occupational Therapist. Miriam was involved with the establishment of two occupational therapy services in the West of Ireland. A vocational rehabilitation service for individuals with Arthritis and a Mental Health Rehabilitation service for individuals with severe and enduring mental illness.
Primary research interests include: mental health, occupational engagement, self-management, chronic illness management and recovery orientated practices in Mental Health services.
Clinical research includes the following:
- Examining the impact of an occupational therapy service in a locked male ward in acute adult Psychiatry
- Irish occupational therapists experiences of using a self-management tool; the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) with clients in Community Mental Health services
- Recovery Through Activity – a pilot project exploring an occupation based group to promote recovery amongst clients with severe and enduring mental illness in a rural town in the West of Ireland
- Exploring the use of a concordance assessment to promote goal setting and activate change through motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy with a client diagnosed with Schizophrenia: a case study.
