Module description

In this module you will be introduced to a broad overview of orthopaedic health issues as they relate to Sport and Exercise Medicine.  This module comprises two study days taught by practitioners and academics, supported by online engagement with reading and activities on the module’s ELE page, leading to a summative assignment in the form of an abstract and e-poster, aligned to the format of one of the key conferences in the field. 

Module aims - intentions of the module

This main objective of this module is to provide you with specialised knowledge and critical understanding of interdisciplinary orthopaedic-related topics in Sport and Exercise Medicine that relate to positive health, performance and recovery from injury. 

This module will improve your employment prospects by enabling you to critically engage and evaluate the evidence relating to key issues relating to orthopaedic challenges in Sport and Exercise Medicine.  Through the contact days, you will have interactive sessions which will provide you with insights to anatomy and clinical examination techniques, as well as case-based approaches to ensure a holistic understand of the context in which orthopaedic issues are considered and managed, for different sports and a range of athletes. You will develop transferable skills in identifying and reviewing the relevant literature, summarising and condensing information and communicating complex information in an accessible form to a specific audience within sport and exercise.

Syllabus plan

Whilst the module’s precise content may vary from year to year, the taught content is likely to include:

 

-       Disorders of the main joints of the body (e.g. knee, shoulder, hip, foot, spine)

-       Injury – epidemiology, impact (including psychological)

-       Chronic pain

-       Imaging (e.g. after rotator cuff injury)

-       Injections

-       Indications for surgery

-       Physiotherapy

-       Rehabilitation (e.g. after anterior cruciate ligament injury)

-       Retirement

 

Please note, in light of Covid19:

-          Face-to-face scheduled lectures may be replaced by short pre-recorded videos for each topic (15-20 minutes) and/or brief overview lectures delivered via MS Teams/Zoom, with learning consolidated by self-directed learning resources and ELE activities.

-          Small-group discussion in tutorials and seminars may be replaced by synchronous group discussion on Teams/ Zoom; or asynchronous online discussion, for example via Yammer or ELE Discussion board

-          Workshops involving face-to-face classroom teaching may be replaced by synchronous sessions on Teams/Zoom; or Asynchronous workshop activities supported with discussion forum

-          Skills workshops involving practical skills acquisition demonstrations may be replaced by short pre-recorded videos as pre-learning; or workshop via Teams/Zoom.
