MSc Environment and Human Health

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship 2015-16

Where are you from?

I am from Nigeria.

Why did you apply to the University of Exeter?

I chose to study at the University of Exeter because of its worldwide reputation for teaching and high quality research. The University collaborates with renowned global researchers at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH), therefore I applied to learn from the best as this was my area of interest.

What programme are you studying and how are you finding it?

I am currently studying the MSc Environment and Human Health course at the Truro campus. The modules are really interesting, interactive and intellectually stimulating. I enjoy the different methods of teaching because they deepen my understanding of how the environment affects human health. The tutors are readily accessible and this support has really improved my student experience.

Why did you apply for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship and how will it help you to fulfil your aspirations back in your home country?

I applied for the scholarship because I wanted an opportunity to acquire in-depth knowledge that will enable me contribute potentially to the development needs of Nigeria. The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is a prestigious award and it has given me the opportunity to study at one of the best universities in the UK. I have developed the skills to investigate contemporary public health inequalities, explore the effects of climate change, critically analyse evidence, and suggest potential solutions to policy makers. Upon return to my home country, I will apply gained knowledge and skills to improve the health and wellbeing of population and also promote sustainable practices to preserve the environment in which we live.

Do you have any recommendations for students interested in applying to Exeter?

The University of Exeter offers a great academic experience, supportive tutors, and a beautiful campus. No matter your area of study, you will have access to well-stocked libraries, multidisciplinary researchers, friendly colleagues from different countries, and numerous social activities. The lovely beaches in Cornwall and the peaceful community provide a calm environment to study. I have had an exciting experience so far, as the two campuses have everything you need to succeed in your academic and professional life.
