Module description

During this module you will participate in a variety of seminars to explore the fundamentals of patient care sociological, psychological and inter-professional clinical context. Within this module is embedded the Time for Dementia programme; a multi-organisation educational programme led by Brighton and Sussex Medical School

which involves, amongst others, The Alzheimer’s Society, universities, healthcare students and families living with

the impact of dementia.  Its aim is to provide you with understanding, empathy, knowledge and compassion to support families and patients living with dementia

Module aims - intentions of the module

The role of a professional radiographer is high-quality patient care. As a radiographer, you must not just know what professional conduct is, you must behave in this way both instinctively and at all times.

This module aims to develop appropriate inter-personal skills, and an understanding of aspects of sociology and psychology as they apply to the inter-professional clinical context.

Psychology

Learning theory, cognition, individual differences, nature and nurture, emotion and motivation.

Prejudice, stigma

Basic concepts in mental health.

Social psychology, health psychology including stress and concordance.

Relationship of psychological states to health and altered function.

Sociology

Social inequalities and their impact upon health.

Health inequalities. 

Equality and diversity.

Interpersonal Skills

Principles of communication.

Reflective practice.

Self-awareness and self care.

Professional Issues

Types of consent.

Professionalism, professional ethics, accountability and duty of care.

Role of state-registration, the Health and Care Professions Council, and professional bodies.

Continuing professional development.

Inter-professional working; impact on patient care.

Inter-professional learning; laying the foundation for interdisciplinary teamwork.
