Exeter Collaboration for Academic Primary Care (APEx)

Cancer diagnosis and detection

The Cancer Theme portfolio builds on more than two decades of internationally recognized and impactful research. It conducts qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research primarily related to the diagnosis and detection of symptomatic cancer through primary and community care. Initially this was identifying who should be tested for possible cancer and was followed by studying how and where testing should be conducted. Our focus now extends to studying:

  • cancer screening;
  • the added value of genetic information; and
  • the use of new technologies to screen higher-risk patients and asymptomatic populations.

The Cancer Theme’s vision is to inform (inter)national policy and clinical practice through impactful research to improve early cancer diagnosis and patient outcomes through the study of asymptomatic and symptomatic populations and incorporating genetic data.

We are a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers with backgrounds in statistics, health services and public health research, allied health care professions, general practice, psychology and biological/biomedical sciences. We attract a wide portfolio of funders, including NIHR, cancer charities, philanthropy and industrial partners.

The aims are:

  • To conduct research to identify how best to reduce inequalities in testing for suspected cancer in symptomatic patients presenting to primary care
  • To conduct research to identify how best to screen for cancer in higher-risk patients and asymptomatic populations
  • To investigate the value of adding genetic information to symptom information to facilitate the early diagnosis of cancer
