During my PhD I developed a track record applying stable isotope tracers and molecular biological methods to understand muscle metabolic/ functional regulation by the environment, nutrition and exercise. I next sought to continue my work in human metabolism whilst learning new experimental skills using model organisms, with a longer-term view to establish a laboratory that translates new discoveries in lower systems directly into people. I, therefore, undertook a postdoc position at the University of Nottingham examining novel molecular regulators of muscle health using the worm C. elegans as the simplest model system for studying in vivo systems biology. In 2012 I accepted a lectureship at Bournemouth University, followed in 2014 by a lectureship at the University of Exeter. I now head a research programme that aims to understand fundamental mechanisms of skeletal muscle regulation in health and disease, and discover interventions for muscle health maintenance. Through an interdisciplinary approach that is only possible through strong international collaborations, my group continues its curiosity-driven strategy to uncover new causes of, and countermeasures against muscle disease and optimising adaptation to nutrition and exercise.
