James Grellier is a transdisciplinary epidemiologist and environmental scientist interested in understanding the links between human health and the environment, including exposure to nature, chemicals, ionising and non-ionising radiation, and occupational hazards. He uses epidemiological data to quantify risks and benefits to health in support of decision-making in public health, environmental and occupational settings. Key themes of his research include: 1) investigating the role of the environment in determining health; 2) identifying and reducing uncertainties in exposure-health pathways; and 3) forecasting health impacts under environmental and demographic scenarios.
James is a quantitative researcher with considerable experience in study design, data collection, preparation of dosimetry and exposure data (including the use of spatial tools such as GIS), analysis of primary and secondary human data, probabilistic modelling, uncertainty analysis and systematic review.
He enjoys collaborating on impactful transdisciplinary research that meets the needs of a variety of stakeholders and enjoy producing evidence-based guidance for diverse audiences. His work has achieved significant academic, policy and practice impact within the fields of environment and health and occupational health. He has actively sought to influence decision-making and policy through a variety of interactions with stakeholders at the international level (e.g. UN Environment Programme; WHO Regional Office for Europe), national level (Generalitat de Catalunya; Swiss Federal Office of Public Health), and city/local level (e.g. Dorset Coast Forum; Plymouth City Council).
