Dr Anna March is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow whose research focuses on improving the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people through school settings and the wider community. Her work brings together realist methods, qualitative methodologies, implementation science and systems approaches.
 
Anna is interested in understanding how systems can create the conditions for positive mental health, while reducing inequalities and improving opportunities for prevention. Her research combines theory, methodological development and close collaboration with young people, practitioners, policy makers and third-sector organisations. She is interested in developing innovative methods that can help answer challenging research questions about change over time, complexity and sustainability.

 

Anna is currently a Research Fellow in the Children and Young People's Mental Health Research Collaboration (ChYMe). She is working with Professor Vashti Berry on Kailo, a research and design initiative supporting local communities to co-design strategies to improve adolescent mental health. This project focuses on the underlying social drivers of poor adolescent mental health in rural and urban settings. Anna and the evaluation team are using realist evaluation and systems change methods to investigate how and why the Kailo framework functions, for whom and under what circumstances.

 

Before joining ChYMe, Anna taught English and then worked at Anna Freud for five years. Her research was mainly on evaluations of universal mental health and wellbeing programmes in schools, including the Department for Education-funded Education for Wellbeing programme. Her PhD looked at the sustainability of school-based interventions, exploring schools as complex adaptive systems and the challenges around creating systemic change.
