NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in General Practice And Honorary Clinical Associate Research Fellow

 South Cloisters

South Cloisters, University of Exeter, St Luke's Campus, Heavitree Road, Exeter, EX1 2LU, UK

Overview

I joined the University of Exeter in 2022 as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow (ACF) in General Practice.  I am also a GP registrar working at a practice in East Devon.

Before starting my ACF, I completed my medical training at King’s College London as a graduate entry medic.  Before studying medicine, I completed a DPhil in General Practice at the University of Oxford, using the CPRD to complete a large scale matched cohort study looking at how people living with and beyond cancer are cared for in general practice. As part of my DPhil I also completed a qualitative interview study which was published on the HealthTalkOnline website looking at the unmet needs of people living beyond cancer (https://healthtalk.org/living-and-beyond-cancer/overview).

I have worked in different research roles at the University of Oxford, University College London and Imperial College London completing projects on medical education in general practice, cancer survivorship and the health of the UK police force. I currently act as an Associate Editor for the British Journal of General Practice (BJGP).

Qualifications

  • MBBS with distinction, Kings College London, 2015
  • DPhil in Primary Health Care, University of Oxford, 2012
  • MSc in the Control of Infectious Diseases, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 2003
  • BSc in Human Biology, University of Toronto, 2002

Research

Research interests

I am starting a new portfolio of research which will focus on patient safety.  My main interests are medicines management and deprescribing and exploring how GPs communicate to patients about medications.  I am interested in qualitative and systematic review methodology and hope to develop skills in these areas during my fellowship.
