Overview

Dr Joe Butchart is a Consultant Specialist in Dementia and a Consultant Physician in Geriatric and General Medicine at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital. He is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School. He is a Consultant Researcher at the NIHR Exeter Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). He has a special interest in dementia, delirium, neuro-degenerative disease and frailty. He works in the Exeter Memory Clinic for Devon Partnership Trust (DPT) and the Department of Healthcare for Older People at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Trust (RDUH). 

Dr Butchart works as a local Principal Investigator on clinical trials of new treatments for dementia, together with colleagues from the University of Exeter, Devon Partnership Trust, RDUH, and the MRC Clinical Research Facility in Exeter. Research interests include the effects of systemic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction on dementia, delirium and frailty and new potential biomarkers and treatments for these disorders.

Joe completed medical training at the University of Cambridge and higher medical training in Southampton. He completed his PhD research as a Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Southampton and moved to Exeter in 2014.
