Overview

Fay has recently joined the Medical Imaging department as a Lecturer (Education and Research). She will be Module lead for the MSc Degree Apprenticeship Evidence Based Practice module, as well as contributing to undergraduate BSc and degree apprenticeship modules. Fay also provides academic and research tutoring and supervising for both undergraduate and postgraduate projects.

As an early career researcher, she is broadly interested in applied health research in rheumatology and musculoskeletal conditions utilising a range of techniques. She is specifically interested research in bone, osteoporosis, falls and fragility.

Qualifications

  • 2019 PhD Biomedical Physics (University of Exeter)
  • 2012 MSc Sport and Exercise Science; Physiology (Manchester Metropolitan University)
  • 2011 BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science (Manchester Metropolitan University)

Career

Fay has an interdisciplinary background, she began with degrees in Sports and Exercise Science (BSc) and Sports and Exercise Science Physiology (MSc), before completing a PhD in Biomedical Physics at Exeter where she focussed her research on the spine and back pain.

After completing her PhD in 2019, Fay relocated to the West Midlands where she took a combined role in the NHS as a Senior Research Assistant in Rheumatology, and a Bone Density Technician in an Osteoporosis Service. Her role in the osteoporosis service gained her experience in Fracture Liaison services and she led clinical audits, staff training and quality and assurance within the technical team.

Fay returned to Exeter as Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in 2021 to work on an NIHR ARC funded project called the FLEXI Study (FaLls EXercise Implementation), which she will conttinue to contribute to till April 2024.

Research interests

Fay is a researcher broadly interested in applied health research in rheumatology and musculoskeletal conditions. She is specifically interested research in older people, osteoporosis and falls and fragility.

Fay is primarily working on the FLEXI Study (FaLls EXercise Implementation), which looks at the wider scale-up of the Falls Management Exercise (FaME) programme; an implementation and cost analysis study. This is a national project with participating regions including Greater Manchester, South West Peninsula and the East Midlands. The research is funded by the National Institute for health Research, Applied Research Council (NIHR ARC), Healthy Ageing, Dementia and Frailty National Priority area.
