Overview

Prof Anne Corbett is Professor in Dementia Research and Director for Business Engagement and Innovation for the Department of Health and Community Sciences. Anne conducted her post-graduate PhD research at Imperial College in the field of molecular biology, infection and disease, giving her a grounding in molecular science and genetics. She then spent several years outside of academia working in research communications and implementation in the research team at Alzheimer’s Society UK. She returned to academia in 2011, applying her combined experience in basic science, dementia and translational research to dementia and ageing research. She spent four years at King’s College London where she developed a wide portfolio of dementia research ranging from online studies into risk reduction, drug discovery, clinical trials and care home research. She has particular expertise in clinical trial delivery, online research, translational research and patient and public involvement.

Anne’s research at the University of Exeter focuses on two broad areas. The first is cognitive health in ageing, which is built around a large online research cohort of people over 50, the PROTECT study, and an innovative digital platform that supports her research. She is involved with a wide portfolio of research in this field including clinical trials, longitudinal studies and novel approaches to cogntive monitoring for healthy ageing. Her second are is care home research, focusing on training, psychosocial and pharmacological approaches to improving the quality of dementia care in these settings.

Anne has published widely in the dementia research field, including over 130 peer reviewed publications, several book chapters on dementia and two best practice guidelines, one of which has been translated into eight languages and is in use worldwide. She holds funding from the National Institute of Health Research, Alzheimer’s Society, philanthropic donors and commercial partners.

Research

Research interests

Anne’s research at the University of Exeter focuses on two broad areas. Firstly, Anne leads the large-scale online Platform for Research Online to Investigate Genetics and Cognition in Ageing (PROTECT) study [hyperlink: www.protectstudy.org.uk). PROTECT is a longitudinal cohort of over 25,000 people over 40 that seeks to explore the various genetic, lifestyle, environmental and medical factors involved in cognitive health and dementia risk in older adults. PROTECT is also an online clinical trials platform which has already delivered several large clinical trials, including a trial of brain training games in 9700 people, a remote, virtual trial of Vitamin D supplementation in 584 people and an intensive dietary supplementation trial in 60 people. Anne is developing this exciting portfolio of online ageing research including a series of nested studies including clinical trials and analysis of big data across a wide network of collaborators and partners and the development of digital infrastructure for trials delivery and cognitive monitoring technology.

Anne’s research also focuses on care home settings and dementia care. She has a particular interest in developing approaches that respond to the unique challenges and pressures that exist in care homes, and her work includes clinical trials, qualitative studies and reviews focusing on key care areas such as pain management, use of technology, staff training and nighttime care.

Teaching

University Teaching Framework

My teaching focusses on supporting students to develop their skills, knowledge and experience in research fields related to their field of study. This includes:

- Hosting a cohort of Final Year Medical Science students to complete Research Projects utilising data from our PROTECT study

- Hosting a Special Study Unit on cognitive health research for Third Year Medical students

- Supporting critical appraisal and literature review modules across the year groups and College disciplines

I am also an Academic Tutor for a group of current Year 1 Neuroscience students

Supporting Professional Development

Beyond the University teaching framework I have also dedicated time to teaching and training in key settings to embed knowledge and understanding about cognitive health and dementia care. These activities include:

- Authoring a Best Practice Guideline for management of behavioural symptoms in dementia, which is in use across the workd and translated into eight languages

- Delivering training on the best practice guide described above to GP and care staff groups

- Co-creating and delivering training in a tool to reduce placebo response in trials of behavioural symptoms in people with neurodegernative diseases

Finally, I have delivered seminars and workshops to students and researchers on Science Communication and Dissemination in the UK, US and Norway.
