Dr Naser Taleshi is a Lecturer in Biomechanics and Data Science in Public Health and Sport Sciences at the University of Exeter. He trained as an engineer, with a BSc in Electrical Engineering and an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Tehran, before completing an EPSRC-funded PhD in Biomechanics at Exeter on how people control balance on moving platforms. He then joined Professor Sallie Lamb's ERC STEPPING OUT programme as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, studying how and why older people fall.
His research brings together biomechanics, engineering and data science. He uses wearable sensors, computer vision and machine learning to measure how people move in everyday life, with the aim of predicting falls before they happen and preventing them. He is a member of the INTERSECT Human Movement group.
Postgraduate research opportunities: Dr Taleshi welcomes enquiries from students interested in a PhD or MSc by Research in falls, balance, biomechanics, wearable sensing, computer vision or machine learning for health. He is happy to support applications to funding schemes such as the EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award, the China Scholarship Council and the Commonwealth Scholarship.
