About me:

Harry is a lecturer in health data science with a background in mathematical modelling. His PhD was in mathematical modelling in cardiac electrophysiology with Prof. John Terry, in which he developed techniques to use simulations of biophysics to provide information to a cardiologist during atrial fibrillation therapy. He moved from the maths department to the medical school to work in IBD Pharmacogenetics where he developed predictive models for treatment failure in Anti-TNF therapy for luminal Crohn's disease, identified genetic variants associated with disease risk and adverse event risk, and used genetic epidemiology to identify causal risk factors for gastrointestinal conditions.

Harry started working as an Independent Research Fellow within EXCEED in 2020, and his research focuses on building statistical models to explore progression rates in type 2 diabetes. He also researches genetics and aetiology of diabetic complications.

Interests:

Harry’s research interests are in the application of mathematical and statistical modelling to help understand human physiology and predict outcomes using large data resources. At the moment, Harry’s main project is building models of diabetes progression, defined by HbA1c gradients and treatment escalation, with the goal of understanding why different people progress at different rates and eventually building predictive tools that could help a clinician understand whether a patient is likely to progress quickly.

Harry is also interested in genetics and causal inference, particularly in the roles of techniques such as genome-wide association studies and Mendelian Randomisation to explore causal risk factors for human diseases.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Mathematical Modelling of Cardiac Electrophysiology, University of Exeter
  • MSc (res) in Mathematical Modelling of Population Dynamics, Oxford Brookes University
  • BSc in Mathematics at the University of Portsmouth
