Dr Erica Burnell

Erica is a Lecturer in Pharmacology for the BSc Biomedical Science, BSc Neuroscience and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) programmes.
Her research background is in drug design, particularly using compounds found in nature. She received her BSc in Medicinal Chemistry from Queen’s University Belfast in 2009, spending a year working at the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim in Germany as part of her degree. Following a PhD at the University of Manchester synthesising natural products and novel drug molecules, she carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Bristol designing tool compounds to study mechanisms of learning and memory.
In 2017, Erica moved to the National University of Ireland Galway as an Associate Lecturer, where she was Programme Lead for the BSc in Medicinal Chemistry. She joined the University of Exeter as a Lecturer in 2021.
