Dr Doris George Yohannan
Lecturer
Clinical and Biomedical Sciences
Doris is a Lecturer in Anatomy within the Education and Scholarship job family in the University of Exeter Medical School. He has extensive experience in dissection-based teaching of Anatomy. Before joining the University of Exeter, he taught anatomy in India from 2011, earning multiple accolades for his engaging and effective teaching, including the 2022 Raise the Line faculty award by Osmosis (Elsevier) in the Anatomy and Physiology category.
Doris is passionate about clinically oriented anatomy education and the visualization of spatial relationships within the human body. His scholarly work integrates traditional techniques with modern pedagogical tools. Notably, his innovative “Air Anatomy” approach—using simple hand gestures to teach complex spatial anatomy—was published and featured on the cover of Anatomical Sciences Education, a leading journal in the field. He also shares this method widely via his free YouTube channel, Air Anatomy, which has over 9,000 global subscribers.
His research interests include technology-enhanced anatomy education, spatial cognition, and stereoscopic visualization. He has contributed to international collaborations such as the innovation team of Global Neuroanatomy Network, co-authoring works on histology, virtual microscopy, and global anatomy education. He had also worked closely with colleagues of partner institutions in India in radiology and visualization engineering in developing solutions for visualization of anatomy to make anatomy teaching effective - notably a software known as AnaVu. Doris continues to explore innovative approaches to make anatomy more visual, accessible, and clinically relevant for learners.
