Dr David Hohenschurz-Schmidt is Bateman Research Fellow at the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. He has previously worked across Imperial College London, the Imperial Clinical Trials Unit, King’s College London, and Health Sciences University, and holds honorary appointments at Imperial College London, Health Sciences University, and Neuroscience Research Australia (University of New South Wales). 

 

David is a clinical trials methodologist, pain researcher, practising Allied Health Professional and academic educator. His research focuses on improving the design, conduct and interpretation of clinical trials, developing and evaluating complex physical and psychologically informed interventions, and addressing unmet needs in people living with chronic pain and long-term conditions.

 

David has particular expertise in pragmatic clinical trials, control and placebo interventions, mixed-methods research, evidence synthesis, and intervention development and evaluation for painful diabetic neuropathy. 

 

He completed his PhD in Clinical Trials Methodology and Pain Research at Imperial College London in 2023, following an MSc (Hons) in Neuroscience at King’s College London and an MOst (Hons) in Osteopathy. As of August 2026, he has published 47 peer-reviewed articles, including research in BMJ, The Lancet Neurology, PAIN and the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, and has received over £500.000 in competitive research and fellowship funding as Principal or Co-Principal Investigator.

 

He is Chair of the Clinical Trials Special Interest Group of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), Secretary-Elect of the Society for Back Pain Research, and an Editorial Board Member of BMC Medical Research Methodology. He received the IASP Ronald Dubner Prize in 2024 for the best body of work by a pain trainee globally.
