Historically, the Primary Care department was situated within the Peninsula Medical School, a collaboration with the University of Plymouth.

In 2014, the Academic Collaboration for Primary Care (APEx) was developed, involving numerous research groups and individuals across the University of Exeter Medical School, NHS England, NIHR South West and National, RCGP (Tamar Faculty), and Devon and Torbay CCGs.
