About me:
Umesh Kadam is a clinical epidemiologist, health services researcher, a GP and has had honorary academic roles with acute Trusts and Public Health. He is an experienced clinical academic, whose career has been supported by personal MRC, NIHR and Royal Society Fellowships, and culminating in a Fellowship by Distinction award by the UK Faculty of Public Health.
Umesh’s research focus has been on multimorbidity and comorbidity, and he was the first UK academic to develop these concepts from 2001. He has led the development of programmes, which have included musculoskeletal comorbidity and ageing multimorbidity research, specifically focusing on population-based patient reported outcomes, and cardiometabolic comorbidity and cardio-oncology multimorbidity research. The integrated care data programmes have been supported by MRC, NIHR, Wellcome Trust, HDRUK and BHF funding. The research is underpinned by strong NHS and academic networks, collaborations with Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, India and Singapore, and industry partners who focus on patient portals, Artificial Intelligence (AI) predictive modelling, AI application to free text records and integrated data systems.
He is a Chair of the NIHR Advanced Fellowship panel and a member of the MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship panel; a Chair of Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) committee; and a NIHR mentor. He was also previously a member of the NIHR Health Services and Research Delivery panels. As primary supervisor, he has a sustained track record of application successes in supporting multidisciplinary academics in NIHR, BHF and Wellcome Trust Fellowship applications. He has been a Chair at Universities of Keele and Leicester.
Interests:
As a clinician and a researcher, Umesh is interested in people who experience several different diseases at the same time and the development of these over the life course. His research aims are to:
(i) understand patient and carer perspectives and develop ways of how they can manage their multiple conditions;
(ii) help healthcare professionals deal with conflicts created when managing patients with several conditions in order in make better decisions and tailor treatments;
(iii) to understand how local and national health policy influences the care pathways of individual diseases and when there is the balance between getting the best out of a healthcare system with the cost constraints that we face.
His multi-disciplinary programme covers clinical epidemiology and pharmaco-epidemiology of cardiovascular and cardio-metabolic disease (particularly heart failure and diabetes) and chronic diseases of ageing (particularly osteoarthritis).
