Office hours
My academic hours are currently limited to Tuesdays 9-5 and I may not be able to respond as timely as I would prefer outside of these hours.
Tom Scurr (he/him)
I am a clinical education academic fellow, psychiatric trainee and clinical educator within Devon Partnership Trust and University of Exeter.
I am currently completing my core training in psychiatry within Devon Partnership Trust. Alongside this, I am undertaking a part-time research role in clinical education within the Health Professions Education and Wellbeing Research Group within the University of Exeter and funded by NIHR, as an opportunity to develop my research interests and experience. I have also completed a postgraduate certificate in Health Research Methods as part of this, having previously completed a PgCert in Medical Education through Cardiff University.
I have clinical interests in the interface of physical and mental health and how patients, their carers, and professionals navigate these often very different systems. I also have an interest in how people understand themselves, the systems, and the world around them in the context of illness and recovery, and find meaning within these contexts. Humans are innate storytellers, and we constantly create and construct meaningful stories about ourselves and our lives. I am interested in understanding these stories, how we construct them in difficult circumstances like illness, and how these stories can promote and inhibit recovery. I am interested in exploring using narrative medicine as a means to utilise storytelling as a therapeutic tool.
I have a background in cognitive neuroscience and psychology and delivering both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, and have previously worked in several roles in adult mental health services across the South West.
