Miss Beccy Summers
Postgraduate Research Associate
Health and Community Sciences
About me:
Beccy joined the Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement team at University of Exeter this year (2022) after completing her PhD in Health Economics at Swansea University. Her research centred on exploring key healthcare stakeholder perspectives on value in patient education and activation programmes in cancer care.
She comes from an adult nursing background, and as such is passionate about making sure that the care provided to people is in keeping with their, and their family’s, values, believing in involving patients, the public and carers in the development of care. It was this drive to listen to, and act upon, the voice of healthcare service-users which led her to join the Applied Research Collaboration South West Peninsula (PenARC) team.
Interests:
My research interests are primarily focused on patient and public involvement in research and ensuring that a diverse range of patients, carers and the public are provided with the opportunity to shape healthcare research so that it is of higher quality and more relevant to the local community. I have a keen interest in public engagement, particularly with young people.
My MSc and PhD were focused upon patient education and patient activation in type 1 diabetes and cancer care, and I retain an interest in work focused upon equipping patients and family carers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to manage their own health and healthcare.
