Postgraduate taught

Based on St Luke’s campus, I am an enthusiastic educator who has been involved in the development and delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the department for over 10 years.

Prior to working for the University I worked as a Clinical Scientist (Molecular Genetics) in the NHS for more than 10 years and my research background is in cancer cell biology. My specialist teaching areas include cancer biology and genetics/genomics (including pharmacogenomics).

Having been deputy programme lead for the MSc Genomic Medicine programme and led a variety of modules for a number of years currently my main responsibility is overseeing the portfolio of postgraduate taught programmes in the department to ensure excellent education and student experience.

Programmes

Within the department we have varied portfolio of taught postgraduate programmes available at PGCert, PGDip and MSc level, both full time and part time.

We are passionate about the student experience and aspire for all students on our programmes to achieve their full academic potential to reach their personal and career goals.

We aim to make our postgraduate programmes accessible to as many students as possible by offering online learning as part of the programmes with some being delivered 100% online.

Our programmes include:

Funding

We offer some bursary/funding opportunities from sources such as:

These funding opportunities improve accessibility to the programmes contributing a diverse cohort of students studying our programmes. Eligibility for the funding opportunities varies from programme to programme, details are available on the programme websites.

Students

Our programme benefit from having varied cohorts of students including:

  • Intercalating medical students
  • Graduates in Medical Sciences, Life Sciences, Maths and Computer Science
  • Clinically qualified individuals (doctors, nurses and allied health professionals).

The different experience and knowledge our students have enables them to share experiences and to support each other in their studies.

Graduate destinations

The academics that teach on our programmes come from very diverse backgrounds (industry, NHS, research) and provide fantastic role modelling to our students in terms of the career options available to them when they graduate.

Graduate destinations for our students are very varied:

  • PhD study in their chosen area.
  • NHS, graduates have either entered the NHS or continued their careers in the NHS as clinical practitioners or diagnostic service providers or analysts. We have examples of NHS doctors changing their chosen area of speciality as a direct result of studying one of our programmes.
  • Industry is also another popular destination for our students working for companies such as Davita Kidney care or Optimum Patient Care.

Careers support

All University of Exeter students have access to Career Zone, which gives access to a wealth of business contacts, support and training as well as the opportunity to meet potential employers at our regular Careers Fairs.
