Owen is a Lecturer within the University of Exeter Medical School, joining in January 2022, from his previous role as a Research Associate in Sport & Health Science at the University. He completed his PhD in Clinical Exercise Physiology (Sport & Health Science) in 2018, focusing on the role of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in management of youth with cystic fibrosis.
His teaching resposnibilities are across the Medical School, including Medical Imaging, Medicine, Sports Medicinee, and Medical Science. He is currently the Programme Director for Sport & Exercise Medical Sciences; a highly successful hybrid programme of study between the Deaprtments of Clinical & Biomedical Science, and Public Health & Sport Science.
His research interests are predominantly within the role of exercise testing and training in chronic lung disease, in particular cystic fibrosis and interstitial lung disease; using this modality to identify prognostically valiuable biomarkers, mechanistic causes of exercise intolerance, and evaluation of therapeutic interventions. He is alsos interested in the pedagogocal impacts of illegitimate publishing in science, and the negative role this plays in open science practices.
