Dr Monika Sledziowska (They/them)
Lecturer
Clinical and Biomedical Sciences
Monika is a Research Fellow in the Department of Public Health and Sport Science and a Lecturer in Genomic Medicine at the University of Exeter. In their current research role, they focus on health economic modelling to support the evaluation of novel public health interventions. Alongside this, they contribute to teaching across Health Data Science, Genomic Medicine, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, with an emphasis on quantitative methods and reproducible data analysis.
Monika joined the University of Exeter in 2025, following a Wellcome Trust–funded PhD in Neuroscience at Cardiff University and over six years of postdoctoral and industry experience across academic and biomedical research settings. Their doctoral and postdoctoral research centred on the impact of genetic variation and gene–environment interactions on brain development, transcriptional regulation and behaviour, using large-scale transcriptomic and multi-omic approaches.
In parallel with their academic career, Monika has held senior scientist roles in the biotechnology sector, where they led the development of reproducible analytical pipelines integrating genetic, transcriptomic and imaging data. They have managed multidisciplinary research teams, contributed to the development of novel medical devices and mitochondria-targeted therapeutics, and designed statistical frameworks to support evidence-based decision-making in both academic and commercial contexts.
Their broader research interests lie in applying data science and advanced statistical methods to problems in public health and genomics, with a strong commitment to open, scalable and reproducible research practices.
