Dr Kim Gooding
Senior Research Fellow
Clinical and Biomedical Sciences
Diabetes and Vascular Research Centre
About me:
Dr Kim Gooding graduated with a degree in Biomedical Science and was awarded a PhD in Medical Sciences from the University of Exeter. Kim is a senior member of the Diabetes and Vascular Medicine Research team within the NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility. In addition to her research.
Kim’s research is primarily focused on examining the relationship between microvascular endothelial function and the vascular complications associated with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. She also works closely with the Patient Public Involvement groups within the NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility.
Interests:
Kim’s research interests are to develop, lead and collaborate on a programme of work to examine the relationship between microvascular function and the vascular complications associated with type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, with particular interests in (1) the underlying pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy, and whether novel imaging biomarkers may help identify individuals at risk of these complications and (2) the vascular actions of incretin based therapies.
Recent research activities have included being the co-lead on the multi-centre Diabetic Retinopathy imaging study that forms part of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) funded SUMMIT consortium. She also actively contributes to the development and management of multi-centre study funded by IMI investigating prognostic imaging biomarkers for diabetic kidney disease.
Her programme of studies examining the microvascular actions of incretin based medications, including the DPP-IV inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists, has been funded by Diabetes UK and has utilised a multi-disciplinary approach using in vitro, ex vivo and clinical studies approaches.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Medical Science
- BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science
