About me:
Ian has worked in Cornwall as a doctor since 1990 and for the Medical School since it first opened in the South West 19 years ago. He was the Deputy Medical Director for Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust with responsibilities including oversight of the GP Performers List, serious untoward event investigations, leading the regional GP Appraisal Team and quality monitoring of general practice. He has been a member of the national Revalidation Development Team and a Cabinet Member of the Association for Medical Humanities.
Until 2018 he was the BMBS Community Sub Dean in Cornwall, the Clinical SSU Lead and a module lead on the MSc in Clinical Education in Exeter. He was appointed as the Associate Dean for Education for the College of Medicine and Health in March 2019 following 5 months as the interim Vice Dean of Education. In 2022 he was appointed as the Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for Education in the new Faculty of Health and Life Science.
Ian is a clinician working as a GP in the Emergency Department at Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, having previously been a GP partner for over 20 years.
He is interested in the use of humanities in medical education, event medicine and planetary health. He organises teams of medical students to help provide first aid care at Glastonbury Festival and has supervised students visiting a medical school in Ethiopia where he helped establish a link. In 2021-2023 he led a creative project with the with the Met Office and other international partners for COP 26, 27 and 28.
Ian is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a full Professor.
