STARS explores whether attending the TCM course can help children’s mathematics attainment, social and emotional development and their behaviour in school.

What does the STARS study involve?

This study will involve 140 primary schools across Bristol, Cornwall, Dorset, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Reading and Southampton. Half of these schools will be randomised to receive the IY-TCM training and half will act as controls. In all schools we will follow current reception children for two years (we call these children our study children).

Attending the TCM course

If randomised to training, all year 1 and year 2 teachers will receive 6 days training, one day a month for 6 months between Sep 19 and May 20. There is no cost to attend this training (normally £700 per teacher), but we expect schools to cover travel and supply teacher costs. In each area there will be at least 2 groups running at once, so you do not necessarily have to have all year 1 and 2 teachers out on the same day.

Training will only occur in Bristol (Lawerence Weston, Knowle, Stokes Croft or Bishopsworth), Cornwall (Truro and Bodmin), Dorset (Weymouth, Poole and Bournemouth), Liverpool (Bootle, Aigburth and Birkenhead), Portsmouth (Gunwharf or Port Solent), Reading (areas TBC) and Southampton (Bassett or Hightown). As long as teachers are willing to travel to these areas, schools are eligible to take part.

Completing questionnaires

We want class teachers to complete brief questionnaires on the behaviour of the study children in the summer terms of 2019, 2020 and 2021. We will also ask schools to provide raw maths SATS scores for each child in summer 2021.

Below is a timeline of the study showing each data collection time point:

Will there be any benefit for schools?

  • Teachers will benefit from six days of free high quality training in classroom management free of charge
  • The ‘Incredible Years: Teacher Classroom Management’ has a commercial value of £700 per teacher.
  • Schools will receive £400 for each Year 1 and Year 2 teacher they have to support the burden of completing questionnaires. Half this money will be given in June 2020 with the remainder June 2021
  • Teachers who have previously attended the course state that it is highly relevant to their teaching practice and they are able to use the strategies in their classrooms straight away
  • We will share the results with your school on completion of the study.

We understand that schools are very busy places and we aim to make each school's participation as easy and straight forward as possible.
