Dr Wiebke Schmidt

Research Technician

Not Known

Peter Lanyon

Wiebke is currently working at the NERC/ BBSRC funded project ‘ShellEye’ at the Centre for Geography, Environment and Society. The project aims to use satellite Earth Observation for monitoring water quality for shellfish aquaculture.

She has a background in biological oceanography, toxicology and zoology gained from the Biological Oceanography (Biocean) programme at the Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel and University of Southern Denmark in Odense.

Her MSc thesis investigated heavy metal contamination in European eels from different habitats in Northern Germany, whilst her PhD at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (Ireland) focused on the potential toxic effects of novel contaminants, such as human pharmaceuticals, in the aquatic environment. She joint the University of Exeter Medical School in 2013 and has worked with Dr Clare Redshaw, evaluating the potential effects and fate of human pharmaceuticals in crops plants, and with Dr Jessica Tyrell at two epidemiological projects, investigating environmental factors influencing the symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis and Meniere’s disease.

Qualifications

PhD in Environmental Toxicology, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Ireland 2013

MSc in biological oceanography, toxicology and zoology at the Christian-Albrechts University, Germany 2008

Research

Research interests

  • Environmental biomonitoring, including the development and improvement of biological effect tools and chemical analysis.
  • Environmental toxicology, specifically the effects of anthropogenic stressors, such as novel pollutants, in the aquatic and terrestrial environment
