Broad research specialisms:

As a neuropsychologist, Sharon's research is focused on the cognitive consequences of different forms of brain impairment.

Her specific specialisms include:

  • Diagnosis and cognitive interventions in Semantic Dementia
  • Diagnosis of Frontotemporal Dementia
  • Cognitive profile of Transient Epileptic Amnesia
  • Emotion processing in Motor Neurone Disease
  • Methodological quality in rehabilitation studies

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Psychology (Honours)
  • Master of Clinical Neuropsychology
  • PhD (Neuropsychology)

Career

2016-         Lecturer in Ageing & Dementia, University of Exeter

Research

Research interests

Sharon's research interests include:

  • Cognitive rehabilitation in acquired brain impairment
  • Cognitive interventions for memory deficits
  • Memory deficits in Transient Epileptic Amnesia
  • Methods for effectively differentiating subtypes of Primary Progressive Aphasia,
  • Emotion recognition in Frontotemporal dementia and Motor Neurone Disease,
  • Factors affecting caregiver burden in early onset dementia.

Research projects

Sharon's current work includes:

  • A 10-year follow up study of patients with Transient Epileptic Amnesia (TEA) to determine the long-term prognosis with respect to memory, problem solving skills and mood.
  • Prospective study investigating the effectiveness of anti-convulsant therapy in ameliorating the memory complaints of newly diagnosed patients with TEA.
  • A feasibility/pilot study of app-based word retraining in patients with Semantic Dementia

Grants/Funding:

Sharon’s TEA projects are funded by the Dunhill Medical Trust.
