Dr Sal Stapley

Research Fellow

6425

College House

Sal Stapley is currently Impact research fellow at the University of Exeter Medical School, UK.

She joined the Discovery team in 2013 to work on a study exploring the association between the staging of cancers and the time interval from first presentation of symptoms in primary care to a confirmed diagnosis. Her research involves data from Clinical Practice Research Datalink and the analysis of large datasets using Stata software.

She has worked with Prof Hamilton on early diagnosis of cancer since 2002 and was recently lead researcher for a project funded by the Department of Health Policy Research Unit. In this study she identified and quantified clinical features of bowel cancer and inflammatory bowel disease in adults under 50.

Qualifications

PhD 2013 - Identifying and quantifying the risk of oesophago-gastric and pancreatic cancer in patients over 40 years presenting symptomatically in primary care University of Bristol

MSc 2007 - Primary Care Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry

Research

Research interests

Sal has developed expertise in manipulating and analysing large datasets of observational data, such as the Clinical Practice Research Datalink and data from the Cancer Registry.

Sal is also interested in whether cancer diagnosis is delayed in patients presenting in primary care with symptoms suggestive of cancer and who have an initial negative investigation result but whose symptoms persist.

Sal works closely with other groups within the University of Exeter and in other academic institutions. She is collaborating with colleagues in the Health Services & Policy Research Group to developing research ideas in the area of cancer and multimorbidity.

Sal’s PhD focused on the identification and quantification of the clinical features of oesophageal, gastric and pancreatic cancer in patients over 40 years presenting with symptoms in primary care.

Her main interest is cancer diagnostics. She is currently lead researcher of a Policy Research Unit in Cancer Awareness, Screening and Early Diagnosis study, which receives funding for a research programme from the Department of Health Policy Research Programme. It is a collaboration between researchers from seven institutions (Queen Mary University of London, UCL, King's College London, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Hull York Medical School, Durham University and Peninsula Medical School/ University of Exeter The study aims to identify and quantify the risk of clinical features of bowel cancer and inflammatory bowel disease in adults under 50 presenting with symptoms in primary care.

She was co-applicant on a successful CRUK Grant ‘Building the evidence base for the early symptomatic diagnosis of cancer’ and is currently a co-applicant on another CRUK grant to assess the impact of the 2015 National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Guidelines on the recognition and referral for suspected cancer.
