Overview

Dr Katarina Kos has a key interest in the field of Type 2 diabetes and its link with obesity and its complications. She is passionate about prevention of diabetes and obesity and collaborates with many teams across disciplines in studies surrounding healthy lifestyle in obesogenic and adverse environments.

She also leads the adipose tissue biology group at the University of Exeter with a special interest in adipose tissue physiology and obesity-related disorders.

Kataria's was more recent interview by the BBC World Service in 'The Forum', a discussion programme, which brings together prominent thinkers from different disciplines with the aim of creating stimulating discussion informed by highly distinct academic, artistic, and cultural perspectives. This prompted a blog with the title: THE BIRTHDAY CAKE DILEMMA in which she reflects on psychological and cultural factors which drive our eating behaviour and the 'emotional crutch' food provides to many.

Qualifications

Ludwing Maximilians University of Munich, MBBS equivalent

MD Ludwig Maximillian University, Munich

PhD at the University of Warwick with the title: Adipose tissue crosstalk with the brain

Masters in Medical Education, University of Warwick

Career

Katarina joined the University of Exeter in 2009 after having worked in Liverpool as Clinical Lecturer and completion on clinical specialist training.

Research

Research interests

Current research interests of Katarina are to increase the understanding of the extracellular matrix proteins and their regulators which influence the healthy expansion of fat tissue. She is curious of whether dysfuntional fat changes such as fibrosis are reversible. She hopes to identify physiological barriers which stop us from losing weight and which can be modified. She is also interested in how fat dysfunction contributes to ill health such as diabetes.

Energy surplus leads to deposition of superfluous energy as fat/ triglycerides in fat/adipose tissue. Katarina believes that this is the most physiological and healthy way to deal with surplus calories. With time and due to a variety of predisposing factors adipose tissue can become stressed. Fat cells expand to the limits of their ability and new fat cells fail to be formed. The emerging dysfunction is characterised by inflammation of fat by infiltration of immune cells such as macrophages. The structural network of connective tissue into which fat cells are embedded also changes with obesity. It becomes rigid and scarred (fibrosed) not allowing fat cells to grow and expand. In the last few years it was demonstrated very convincingly that this process can potentially be reversed. This is very important in light of the improvement of diabetes with weight loss.

Research projects

Effect of yo-yo dieting on fat tissue dysfunction

Macrophage co-culture with adipose tissue explants and the effect on insulin on extracellular matrix regulators

Sedentary behaviour and impairement in glucose tolerance

Effect of GLP-1 analogues on fat tissue dysfunction

Research networks

Katarina has close collaborations with the vascular team, biophysics group, functional genomics team and has an interest in the cross talk of adipose tissue with insulin producing beta cells. Besides laboratory based studies she undertakes projects within the translational medicine framework supported and part of the Exeter NIHR clinical research facility (CRF). She is also working on exploring psychological issues of eating behaviour.

Teaching

Dr Kos is lecturing in Diabetes and Obesity and associated conditions and supervises BClin Sciences student in their practical assignments, has master and PhD students, supervises project students in molecular biology and teaches medical students on research methodology and clinical aspects of diabetes and endocrinology.

She (co-)supervised many successful interdisciplinary PhD students

Dr Natalia Alkhouli/Hammad, with physics and microvascular biology

Dr Richard Pulsford, with sport sciences, now Lecturer at the University of Exeter

Dr Myo Myo Aung, with microvascular biology

Dr Alexander Bowen, ilset tissue biology

Dr Thomas Littlejohn, with epidemiology, now postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford

Katarina led the Exeter Grand Challenge theme: The Obesity Crisis, which was a great success and with more than 60 students one of the best atttended challenges. Many enthusiastic students produced outputs ranging from videos in how to tackle stigma to development of a peer-supported student aclivity and running clubs and healthy eating and lifestyle forums.
