Overview

Current role - Workplace operational Lead Level 6 and 7 Degree apprentice /Senior Academic Leader/Lecturer - Medical Imaging 

In the workplace lead role, I am the external facing University contact for all the NHS Trusts that employ apprentices studying on the BSc and MSc Diagnostic radiography apprentice programme.  I provide all the University of Exeter assessor training, workplace mentor training, and oversee policies such as the clinical supervision. I attend regular meetings with employers to discuss support measures and progress of apprentices. I also oversee all the workplace modules for both MSc and BSc. I am the module lead on three of the five workplace modules that we deliver, undertaking face to face teaching on campus week and leading on regular inline webinars and masterclasses to support the learning of the apprentices.  In my SAL role, I line manage 10 direct reports, undertaking induction into the department, regular check ins, personal development reviews, and advise and support on progression and promotion.

Previous roles:

Advancing practice lead NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly - Seconded 0.5FTE as the cross sytsem lead for all HEE scoping and funding for Advanced practice across all organisations/allied health professions and nursing in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly. Set up a system wide community of practice and a Twitter page and also ran the NHS Futures platform site that housed resources and advice and key links. Organised the first AP conference in Cornwall

Director of quality role Led on the internal QA for the medical school, including TEAP (Teaching Excellence Action Plans), TEM (Teaching Excellence Monitoring) meetings, and also on external QA reviews such as  TEF (Teaching Excellence Framework) submissions and NSS (National Student Survey) action planning.

I also led on PSRB (Professional and Statutory Regulatory Bodies) monitoring and returns; to include MSAR (Medical Schools Annual Return) HCPC (Health Care and Professions Council) annual audits, SCoR (Society and College of Radiographers) reapproval. Involved in the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) accreditation and I contributed to the Medical school GMC (General Medical Council) accreditation of the BMBS (medicine) programme. 

Senior Lecturer for Medical imaging 

I taught a third-year module called Professional skills for Radiographers for 14 years. I also lead on all employability events and liaise with clinical partners and I am currently Co lead or Module lead acoss all the work place modules for the Medical Imaging Diagnostic Radiography Degree apprenticeships at level 6. 

Qualified HCPC Diagnostic radiographer worked in both the NHS and the private sector for 20+ years.

  • BSc Hons Diagnostic Radiography
  • MSc Leadership and Management in health and social care
  • PCAP Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice
  • Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy 
  • Mental health first aid trained
  • Currently studying for an Educational Doctorate - successfuly passed pre thesis phase  

Career

Qualified as a Radiographer in 2001 spent 6 years as radiographer working in NHS Trusts in Warrington, Northampton then Durham, specialising in cardiacs  

Joined Exeter University in 2007 as a lecturer- practitioner, moving up to a Teaching fellow, Lecturer then Senior Lecturer, I was Deputy Director for Medical Imaging in 2010 - 2016 and then was Director of quality for the College of Medicine and Health from 2016 until August 2022 

Undertook a 0.5FTE secondment with the NHS as the Advanced practice lead for Cornwall and IoS Integrated Care system (ICS) from August 2022 - August 2023

Currently fulltime at the uiversity as the Senior Academic leader/Degree apprenticeship level 6 and level 7 workplace lead/IPL lead for the Medical Imaging programmes

Quality, teaching excellence and regulation of healthcare programmes in the UK: a critical perspective

Professionalism in diagnostic radiography and the impact of the Integrated Degree Apprenticeship in diagnostic radiography on the advancement of the profession.

Pre thesis phase essay on research networking 

Currenty undertaking doctoral thesis research into:

An exploratory phenomenological study of the experiences of diagnostic radiographers and their ability to raise concerns about quality of care in a clinical setting. 

Research projects

I will be working on the thesis phase of my EdD from January 2023 - June 2026

An exploratory phenomenological study of the experiences of diagnostic radiographers and their ability to raise concerns about patient care using the interpretevist paradigm

Interpretative phenomenological analysis will be used for analysis of data  

Research networks

I was the student rep for the EdD from 2019 - 2021  attending the Post Graduate Research Executive, SSIS Student Staff Liason Ccommittee and gave student feedback on the programme
