Dr Joe Butchart
Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, Consultant Physician
Dr Joe Butchart is a Consultant Physician in Geriatric and General Medicine at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Exeter Medical School. He has a special interest in dementia, delirium, neuro-degenerative disease and frailty. He works in the Exeter Memory Clinic and the Department of Healthcare for Older People at the RD&E. He is the NIHR South West Clinical Research Network (CRN) Specialty Lead for Dementia.
Dr Butchart works as a local Principal Investigator on clinical trials of new treatments for dementia, together with colleagues from Devon Partnership Trust, the RD&E and the MRC Clinical Research Facility in Exeter. He is a collaborator with colleagues at the Centre for Research in Ageing and Cognitive Health (REACH). Research interests include the effects of systemic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction on dementia, delirium and frailty and new potential biomarkers and treatments for these disorders.
Joe completed medical training at the University of Cambridge and higher medical training in Southampton. He completed his PhD research as a Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Southampton and moved to Exeter in 2014.
