Overview

I am a transdisciplinary epidemiologist and environmental scientist working on quantification of impacts on human health of exposure to a variety of environmental and occupational factors.

My background in epidemiology, environmental health impact assessment, and environmental geochemistry/geology provides me with an insight into the causal chains linking environmental stressors and potential impacts on human human health.

I have experience of using a variety of quantitative tools to better understand and communicate health impacts of environmental and occupational exposures, particularly concerning ionising and non-ionising radiation, chemicals, heat and other aspects of the natural environment, especially green and blue space. I have worked on various non-communicable diseases including cancers, perinatal outcomes, neurodevelopment, and mental health.

My overall aim is to serve public health through improving decision-making in a variety of sectors by conducting relevant cross-sectoral research and producing high quality evidence in support of this.

I am currently working as a Senior Research Fellow based at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health on three projects: HEROIC (Health and Economic impacts of Reducing Overheating in Cities) project, which is funded by the Wellcome Trust's ‘Our Planet Our Health’ grant; and the Horizon Europe-funded GOLIAT (5G expOsure, causaL effects, and rIsk perception through citizen engAgemenT) and RESONATE (Building individual and community RESilience thrOugh NATurE-based therapies) project.

I also hold a Senior Scientist position at the Institute of Psychology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, where I work on the Foundation for Polish Science-funded project "NeuroSmog: Determining the impact of air pollution on the developing brain".

Research

Research interests

Over the past fifteen years I have worked in a number of research areas relating to the environment, occupation, and health. This work has included modelling of environmental processes, exposure assessment, epidemiological analysis, systematic review and meta-analysis, and health impact assessment based on epidemiological and secondary data. Most recently I have been working on risk perception using the mental models approach.

I have an interest in the treatment of multiple types of uncertainty in exposure assessment, epidemiological modelling, and quantitative health impact assessment.

I strongly believe that the results of publicly-funded research should be made available to the public and find engagement with the public a particularly rewarding part of my work.
