I am a Chartered Psychologist working in the field of health behaviour change.

Qualifications

  • PhD
  • C Psychol

Career

I have worked at University of Exeter Medical School and its precursor (Peninsula Medical School) since 2002. Prior to that, I was the R&D Manager for Mid Devon Primary Care Research Group, a NHS-based research group with a portfolio of applied health services research.

Research

Research interests

My main research interest is in supporting behaviour change for the prevention or management of chronic illnesses. I am engaged in a range of research to develop and evaluate practical interventions to prevent cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes and to support self-care by people with chronic illnesses.

I have helped to develop and evaluate intervention materials and to develop training courses for service providers to support people to lose weight (Waste the Waist, SkiM, ImpulsePal), to increase physical activity (eCOACHER), to stop smoking (EARS) and to improve self-care in chronic illnesses such as heart failure (REACH-HF) and to prevent type 2 diabetes (WAKEUP, Norfolk Diabetes Prevention Study, ComPoD).

I have a strong interest in research to better understand the processes of behaviour change in behavioural interventions using both qualitative and quantitative methods. A recent systematic review of "what works for supporting changes in diet and physical activity" has informed both a European evidence-based guideline (IMAGE) and NICE guidance on the prevention of diabetes.
