South Cloisters 3.09g

Profile

Chris joined PenTAG (Peninsula Technology Assessment Group) from the ESRC funded Centre for Evidence and Policy at King’s College, London (KCL). Working with Alan Gomersall and Lesley Grayson, his role at KCL included work on mixed-methods and mixed topical information retrieval, primarily in Public Health but also Education, Terrorism and the broader Social Sciences. Chris worked with SCIE, C4EO, The Welsh Assembly Government, Irish National Council for Special Education and The Home Office, producing rapid evidence assessments, reviews and systematic reviews.

At the University of Exeter Medical School (UEMS), Chris is a senior research fellow and he is responsible for the leadership and management of the Information Specialist (IS) team. The team work with a range of stakeholders including researchers, clinicians and members of the public to deliver a portfolio of evidence-based work. Chris has recently completed work for Cochrane, NICE, the RfPB and SDO, and the Health Technology Assessment work stream. Methodologically, this has encompassed reviews of diagnostic accuracy, mixed methods reviews, reviews of theory driven approaches (Realist Reviews) and systematic reviews of clinical and cost effectiveness.

The IS team are actively engaged in developing their own work streams. Building on the work started at KCL, Chris and the team has been developing their collective interests in the use of UK-based, bibliographic databases in the fields of Health and Social Care. This work has expanded and seeks to appraise how the bibliographic tools we use to identify evidence actually work. This work is on-going.

Chris has experience leading research projects and grants. Chris has led various projects as a primary and co-investigator. Most recently, Chris was a co-applicant to Exeter’s successful application to the HSDR to host one of three centres for evidence synthesis.

Teaching and supervision is an important part of Chris’ work. Chris meets and works with MA, MSc and PhD students and he is involved in teaching students, clinicians and researchers, as well as on our popular ‘Searching and Beyond’ Course.

Professionally

Chris is a former chair of InterTASC ISSG and he was chair of the inaugural InterTASC ISSG workshop hosted in Exeter (2014). Chris is a member of the NICE Joint Information Group (NICE JIG), Cochrane Information Retrieval Methods Group (IRMG) and the CILIP Health libraries Group (HLG). At the University of Exeter, he sits on the UEMS library implementation group and he is also a deputy director of PenTAG, the technology assessment group at the UEMS. Chris is currently a co-editor of the qualitative research chapter of SuRe Info.

Academics

Chris’ MA thesis focused on upward information use in downwards markets and measured the effect of the 2009 recession on information use and the role of information workers. It questioned the value of information and went on to win the BIALL dissertation award.

Chris’ PhD appraises the use of tailored literature searching models in complex systematic reviews. He is supervised by Dr Ruth Garside, Professor Chris Hyde, Professor Nicky Britten and Dr Andrew Booth (ScHARR) and is funded by the NIHR HTA Grant.

Chris has delivered conference presentations nationality and inter-nationally. He has delivered invited lectures for groups such as NICE, at their Joint Information Day, and he was invited to deliver an international lecture tour in Japan in 2016. Chris continues to teach on systematic reviewing and information retrieval.  He teaches regularly at the German Cochrane Centre and works closely with the European Academy of Neurology, where he advises on and teaches information retrieval for the development of guidelines.

Broad research specialisms

Public Health and social science is the field of research that Chris favours. Chris was the information specialist on the following evidence reviews for NICE CPH: CG117 , PH34 , PH32 , PH35  and PH37, and he has extensive experience as a systematic reviewer in systematic reviews of effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and of qualitative evidence. Most recently, Chris was the Co-PI and led a systematic review evaluating the effectiveness of physical training strategies for optimising and maintaining physical performance differences between men and women in military roles. This work formed part of a report submitted to the Secretary of State informing a decision on lifting the exclusion of women in GCC roles.

Chris’ research interest is in the process of study identification in reviews. The use of supplementary search techniques, particularly searching for grey or hard-to-locate literature for incorporation into reviews, sit at the heart of his day-to-day work and academic research. Chris has authored and co-authored over 65 peer-reviewed publications.
