Overview

Since January 2022, Caroline has been conducting the Mental Health Patient Survey as part of the Di-Facto Study, based in Primary Care.

Alongside her role in the Medical School, Caroline joined Psychology in July 2021 to assist Prof Heather O'Mahen with developing and submitting grant proposals focusing on perinatal mental health. Examples include ACORN: A multi-site RCT to test the impact of a remotely delivered group treatment for antenatal anxiety; and developing an intervention for bereaved mothers whose babies have been removed due to safeguarding issues.

Caroline joined the University of Exeter in 2009 to evaluate the Every Child a Writer initiative in the Graduate School of Education. While based in the Medical School since 2010, her research has been health services related focusing on vulnerable groups of people, primarily with mental ill-health. Studies include: 

• TriMaster, a randomised double-blind crossover study of a DPP4 inhibitor, SGLT2 inhibitor and thiazolidinedione as a second or third line therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes who have suboptimal glycaemic control on therapy with metformin-only or metformin and a sulphonylurea.
• MIR trial, a double-blind, placebo controlled, randomised CTIMP investigating the addition of Mirtazapine to SSRIs or SNRIs for treatment resistant depression in primary care.
• CoBalT, an RCT investigating the use of cognitive behavioural therapy for patients with treatment resistant depression
• TREAD, an RCT investigating the use of exercise in the management of patients with recently diagnosed depression.

Previous projects include the third update of the Cochrane systematic review on psychological interventions and coronary heart disease, a systematic review and meta analysis investigating the impact of volunteering on the volunteers’ health, and the Check-Up Study which aimed to improve the uptake of the NHS cardiovascular health check in primary care.
