Professor boosts dementia expertise at Exeter

A professor who is an expert in older people's medicine has further bolstered Exeter's research expertise in dementia.

Professor Louise Allan has joined the University of Exeter Medical School from Newcastle University. The Professor of Geriatric Medicine has a specialist interest in the neurology and psychiatry of old age.

Her current research focuses on falls and physical health care in dementia, the effects of delirium on decline in brain health, and non-Alzheimer's dementias including post-stroke dementia and Lewy body disease.

Professor Allan said: "I'm delighted to join Exeter at such an exciting time. The Medical School is growing, and has a strong research base in expertise around dementia and the elderly, which is expanding further. It's a dynamic environment to work in and I'm looking forward to working with colleagues on research that improves people's lives."

Professor Clive Ballard, Dean and Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter Medical School, said: "I'm really pleased to welcome Louise to Exeter. She brings a wealth of high-quality research experience and I'm looking forward to what we can achieve together. Exeter is an Alzheimer's Society Centre of Excellence in dementia care, and Louise's expertise strengthens our outstanding research in this area still further."
