"My life has changed considerably since moving to Exeter ten years ago and the arrival of my daughter Matilda and son Barnaby.
"Unfortunately Barnaby was seriously ill after he was born and spent his first year in and out of hospital. During this difficult and distressing time the ability to work flexibly and the support of my colleagues helped enormously.
"Through my ongoing involvement with Athena SWAN I have gained a greater appreciation of the subtle ways in which policies, personalities and positional power interact to influence the opportunities offered to different individuals and groups.
"I’m pleasantly surprised at how much progress has been made in identifying best practice and enhancing the working environment and career prospects of all staff. For example, I chaired a working group that designed a new mentoring scheme, and I’m delighted that this is now available across the College of Medicine and Health."
